Activity Tracking: Strava Mapping & Manual Sync

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) activity tracking campaigns let participants log activities like running, walking, or cycling to reach goals and earn recognition. To make activity tracking easy and flexible, campaigns can use Strava Mapping and Manual Sync together.

This article explains how these options work for both admins and participants.

What is Strava Mapping?

Strava Mapping allows admins to control how activities from Strava are recorded in a campaign. When a participant connects their Strava account, their activities are enabled to be imported and matched to the correct campaign activity type.

This helps ensure activities are logged consistently and accurately—without participants needing to enter everything manually.

How admins set up Strava Mapping

Admins configure Strava Mapping from the campaign’s Peer-to-Peer Activity Settings.

To set up mapping:

  1. Open the campaign’s Event Dashboard

  2. Select the Peer-to-Peer tab

  3. Go to Peer-to-Peer Activity Settings

  4. Select Strava Mapping

  5. For each Strava activity (such as Run or Ride), choose:
    • The matching campaign activity

    • The unit used by the campaign (for example, miles or kilometers)

Once saved, Strava activities will follow these rules when participants sync their accounts.

Participant experience: activity tracking & sync

Participants manage their activity from the Activity Tracking tab on their fundraising page.

From this area, participants can:

  • View progress toward personal goals

  • See a list of logged activities (date, activity type, and amount)

  • Connect their Strava account for syncing

  • Manually import recent Strava activities using the Import button

When Strava is connected, activities recorded in Strava can be imported to the participant’s activity log based on the campaign’s mapping settings.

Manual sync and manual activity logging

Not all participants use Strava—and that’s okay.

The platform supports manual activity entry, allowing participants to:

  • Log activities by entering the date, activity type, and amount

  • Combine manual entries with Strava-synced activities

  • Keep all activity in one place for accurate totals and progress tracking

This ensures every participant can take part, regardless of how they track their activity.

Why use both Strava Mapping and Manual Sync?

Using both options together provides the best experience:

  • Automation: Strava Mapping reduces manual entry and keeps activity logs accurate

  • Flexibility: Manual logging ensures all participants can track activity

  • Consistency: Admin-defined mapping keeps reporting, badges, and goals aligned

  • Engagement: Participants can focus on their activity—not data entry

Summary

Strava Mapping and Manual Sync work together to create a seamless activity tracking experience. Admins configure how Strava activities are recorded, while participants choose whether to sync automatically, log activity manually, or use both. This flexible approach ensures every activity counts toward goals, badges, and campaign success.
