Peer-to-Peer Pledge Rules

Per-Unit Pledges, Caps, and Deferred Billing

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) campaigns often use pledges to motivate participants and increase fundraising. Campaign Pledge Rules let admins control how pledges work, giving donors flexibility while keeping the experience clear and predictable.

This article explains how to set up:

  • Per-unit pledges

  • Pledge caps

  • Deferred billing options

Where to configure pledge rules

Campaign pledge rules are managed in your campaign’s Peer-to-Peer settings.

To update pledge rules:

  1. Open the campaign’s Event Dashboard

  2. Go to Peer-to-Peer Settings

  3. Select Campaign Pledge Rules

  4. Adjust the options described below

  5. Click Save

Per-unit pledges

Per-unit pledges allow donors to give based on a participant’s activity, such as:

  • “$1 per mile”

  • “$5 per lap”

  • “$2 per workout”

With per-unit pledges:

  • The final donation amount depends on the participant’s total activity

  • Donors support effort and progress, not just a fixed amount

Enable per-unit pledges
Turn this option on to allow donors to make activity-based pledges.

Caps on per-unit pledges

Pledge caps let donors set a maximum total amount for a per-unit pledge. This helps donors feel comfortable supporting participants without worrying about unexpected totals.

Example

  • $5 per mile

  • Cap: $100

  • Participant completes 30 miles → total would be $150, but the donor is capped at $100

Enable pledge caps
Turn this option on to allow donors to set a maximum limit for their per-unit pledge.

Deferred billing options

Deferred billing allows donors to make a pledge now and be charged later—after the campaign ends and activity totals are finalized. This is especially useful for per-unit pledges, where the final amount isn’t known upfront.

You can choose one of the following options:

Optional (card on file)

  • Donors may choose whether to provide payment details at the time of pledging

  • Charges can be completed later

Enforced (card required)

  • Donors must provide a card on file to submit a pledge

  • Payment is processed automatically after the event

No card on file

  • Donors do not provide payment details when pledging

  • Billing is handled separately after the event

Choose the option that best fits your campaign’s needs and donor expectations.

Saving your settings

After configuring your pledge rules, click Save to apply them. These settings will control how pledges are handled for all participants in the campaign.

Summary

Campaign Pledge Rules allow you to:

  • Enable per-unit pledges for activity-based fundraising

  • Protect donors with optional pledge caps

  • Choose flexible or enforced deferred billing options

With the right setup, you can create a pledge experience that’s motivating for participants, transparent for donors, and easy to manage for your organization.
