Checkout Communication Preferences
You can add communication preference questions to your checkout form so donors choose how they want to hear from you while they check out. Their answers save straight to their contact record.
The opt-in fields
Five preference fields are available. Each one is a positive opt-in, which means a box the donor leaves unchecked is recorded as a decline.
| Field | What it sets |
|---|---|
| Email opt-in (news and updates) | Marketing email |
| Email opt-in | General email |
| Phone call opt-in | Phone calls |
| Postal mail opt-in | Postal mail |
| Text message opt-in | SMS text messages |
Adding them to your checkout form
In Edit Event, open the checkout form fields (the Checkout Options area). From the Add a field list, choose the preference field you want and add it. Repeat for each preference you would like to ask about.
They are always optional
Communication preference fields are consent questions, so they cannot be made required. In the form editor they show as Always optional rather than offering a Required switch. Only add a field if you actually want to ask the question, because a box the donor leaves unchecked is recorded as a decline and updates their contact record.
How answers update the contact record
When a donor checks an opt-in box, the matching do-not-contact flag on their contact record is cleared, so they are opted in for that channel. When they leave it unchecked, the flag is set. This keeps each donor's stated preferences in one place on their record, whether they set them at checkout or your team set them by hand.
Because these fields write directly to the contact record, add them only to campaigns where you want donors to set their own preferences. If you leave them off the form, existing preferences on each record are untouched.
