At BetterUnite, we understand that your donor data is one of your most valuable assets. This article covers the most common questions we receive about how we protect, back up, and give you control over your data.
Backups & Infrastructure
BetterUnite runs on Microsoft Azure with real-time data backups and geo-replicated storage. This means your data is continuously backed up and copies are maintained across data centers automatically. If data center experiences an issue, your data remains safe and accessible from a replica in another location.
You don't need to schedule or manage backups yourself, this happens automatically and continuously as part of our platform infrastructure.
Disaster Recovery
In the unlikely event of a system failure, here's what you can expect:
- Potential data loss window: Up to a few hours of the most recent activity in a worst-case scenario, though in most cases the real-time replication means significantly less.
- Recovery time: BetterUnite can be restored and fully operational within minutes to hours, depending on the nature of the failure.
Our geo-replicated architecture means we don't rely on a single point of failure. Your data and our platform are designed to recover quickly and with minimal disruption to your operations.
Data Export
You have full access to your data at any time. BetterUnite allows you to export your donor records and donation/transaction history to CSV format whenever you need it, no special requests, no waiting periods, and no additional fees.
Whether you need a quick export for a board report, an import into another system, or just want a local copy for your own records, you're always in control.
Breach Notification
BetterUnite takes data security incidents seriously. In the event that we identify a data breach affecting your information, we commit to notifying impacted customers without undue delay. Our notification process includes:
- Immediate internal escalation upon detection of a potential breach
- Direct notification to affected organizations within 24-72 hours, including what we know at that point
- Ongoing communication as our investigation progresses, with details on what data was involved, what steps we're taking, and any actions you should consider on your end
We believe transparency and speed are critical in these situations.
Account Closure & Data Portability
If you ever decide to move on from BetterUnite, your data goes with you. Before closing your account, you can use the same CSV export tools available to you throughout your subscription to download a complete copy of your donor data and transaction history at no charge.
We believe your data belongs to you, not to us. There are no export fees, no data hostage situations, and no hoops to jump through. Export what you need, confirm you have everything, and we'll handle the account wind-down from there.
