Getting Started: Donor Advised Fund (DAF) donations with Chariot integration

Get started accepting Donor Advised Fund (DAF) payments with your BetterUnite pages by establishing the integration with Chariot. 

First, go to the Settings page of your BetterUnite account (the gear icon in top right corner of your admin pages) > Integrations > Chariot > Set Up.

  • Complete your registration by filling out your name, selecting your nonprofit organization, and agreeing to Chariot's Terms of Service.

  • Navigate to the "Integrations" Tab and search for the "BetterUnite" tile. Just click the "Activate" button to get started.

  • After clicking "Activate" a popup will appear asking you to add a billing method. Chariot charges a 2.9% donation processing fee. In order to activate your BetterUnite integration, you will have to select a billing method (i.e. manual invoices or auto pay).

  • You now have full access to your Chariot integration within your BetterUnite account. Go back to Settings > Integrations to finish setting up your Chariot integration.
  • After the above steps are completed, return to Settings within your BetterUnite account > Integrations > Chariot and click "Enable DAF" button on the left and provide your EIN, Organization Name, email address and click Connect to fully complete your DAF integration.

Now, you can turn on the ability to accept DAF donations as payments on your individual BetterUnite campaigns. 

In any BetterUnite campaign that you have created and as you create new ones, go to Edit Campaign > Advanced > Advanced Options and scroll to Allow Donor Advised Fund Payments and turn it on by ticking the associated box.

FAQs

What happens when I "Enable" Chariot?

When you enable Chariot, your campaigns will display the option to turn on/off the DAF payment option you can toggle this option on a per-campaign/event basis.
 

What kind of payments does DAF support?

Once this option is enabled on your campaign, on the check out page your donors will see the button to pay by Donor Advised Fund. This button will only be shown if the checkout page has giving amount larger than $0, and if no tickets are being purchased. Since DAF funds can only be used for making straight donations, any ticket purchases are excluded from DAF eligibility.
 

How will I receive my DAF donations from Chariot?

Your nonprofit will receive DAF donations in the same way you're used to (through ACH or check) from the DAF organization. Every donation will also have a Chariot ID which you can use to match the funds when they’re received from the DAF provider (whether via check or electronically). This way, you can easily tie the money received to the donation in your dashboard.
 

Where will I see my DAF donations?

DAF donations will be added as offline payments of payment type: Donor Advised Fund (DAF) in your BetterUnite account. In addition, you can also view the actual payments in your Chariot Dashboard. All donations and associated transaction data will appear directly on your Chariot dashboard. Every donation will also have a Chariot ID which you can use to match the funds when they’re received from the DAF provider (whether via check or electronically). This way, you can easily tie the money received to the donation in your dashboard.
 

Can I opt-out once I opt-in?

Yes, simply click the * icon next to the Enabled indicator to clear the connection. Note this does not cancel your Chariot account, it simply removes the DAF options from your campaigns within BetterUnite.
