Google Health Mapping

Google Health Mapping lets participants in your peer-to-peer campaign count activity from their Fitbit, Pixel Watch and other devices and apps that sync to Google Health. You decide which kinds of activity count toward your campaign, and how. Participants then connect Google Health on their own fundraising page and import their workouts and daily steps with one click.

Google Health works alongside Strava and manual entry. Participants can use whichever fits the way they already track activity.

Before you start

  • Your campaign must be a peer-to-peer campaign with at least one tracked activity, such as "Miles walked" or "Steps". Google Health activity is always counted toward one of your campaign's tracked activities.
  • Decide what you want to count. A walkathon might count walks and runs in miles. A step challenge might count each participant's total daily steps.

Set up Google Health Mapping

  1. Open the Event Dashboard for your campaign.
  2. Select the Peer-to-Peer tab, then Peer-to-Peer Activity Settings.
  3. Choose Google Health Mapping.
  4. Click Add mapping. A new row appears.
  5. In Google Health Activity, choose the kind of activity to count, such as Walk or Daily steps (all day).
  6. In Mapped Activity, choose the campaign activity it counts toward.
  7. In Counts As, choose how it is measured.
  8. Make sure Enabled is checked, add more rows if you need them, then click Save.

As soon as you save at least one enabled row, the Google Health section appears on participants' fundraising pages. If you remove every row, or turn them all off, it disappears again.

What each column means

Column What it does
Enabled Turns the row on or off without deleting it. Rows that are off are ignored when participants import.
Google Health Activity The kind of workout recorded on the participant's device, such as Walk, Run, Bike, Swim or Hike. Daily steps (all day) is the participant's total step count for each day, whether or not they recorded a workout.
Mapped Activity The tracked activity in your campaign that this counts toward.
Counts As How the activity is measured: distance in miles, kilometers or meters, active time in minutes or hours, or steps.

If two rows use the same Google Health activity, the first enabled row is used.

Measurement options

Counts As Example: a 5 km run lasting 30 minutes with 6,200 steps
Distance (miles) 3.11
Distance (kilometers) 5
Distance (meters) 5,000
Active time (minutes) 30
Active time (hours) 0.5
Steps 6,200

Active time leaves out pauses. Daily steps can only be counted as steps, so Counts As is set for you on that row.

Examples

Walkathon counting miles

Google Health Activity Mapped Activity Counts As
Walk Miles walked Distance (miles)
Run Miles walked Distance (miles)
Hike Miles walked Distance (miles)

Step challenge

Google Health Activity Mapped Activity Counts As
Daily steps (all day) Steps Steps

Choose either daily steps or step-based workouts, not both, for the same campaign activity. A participant's daily step total already includes the steps from their workouts, so counting both would count those steps twice.

What participants do

Participants open the Activity Tracking tab on their fundraising page, click Connect Google Health, sign in with Google and allow access to their activity and fitness data. After that, they choose a date range and click Import. Send them the participant guide, Activity Tracking: Connect Google Health (Fitbit and Pixel Watch), so they know what to expect.

How imports work

  • Participants import when they choose. Activity is not pulled in automatically. Remind participants to click Import regularly, and especially before your campaign ends.
  • Up to 90 days at a time. Each import covers a date range of up to 90 days.
  • Nothing counts twice. A workout that was already imported is skipped, even if a participant imports the same dates again or you change the mapping later.
  • Daily steps stay current. Each day's steps are one entry. If a participant imports at lunchtime and again in the evening, that day's entry is updated to the new total.
  • Mapping changes apply going forward. Activity already imported keeps the activity and amount it was imported with.
  • Goals, badges and pledges update right away. Imported activity counts the same as activity entered by hand.

Strava and Google Health together: some participants send their Fitbit workouts to Strava as well. If they import the same workout from both, it counts twice. Ask participants to pick one of the two for each kind of workout.

Privacy

BetterUnite reads only activity and fitness data, and only to count participants' workouts and steps toward your campaign. It never sells this data or uses it for advertising. Participants can disconnect at any time from their fundraising page. Activity already imported stays on their page as part of their progress.

Troubleshooting

What you see What to do
Participants don't see Google Health on their fundraising page Check that Google Health Mapping has at least one row with Enabled checked and a Mapped Activity chosen, and that you clicked Save.
"Choose a campaign activity for every enabled row" when saving Every enabled row needs a Mapped Activity. Choose one, or uncheck Enabled on that row.
A participant says their workouts were skipped The workout type may not be mapped, or it may have no distance when you count distance (common for indoor workouts). Add a row for that activity, or count it as active time.
A mapped activity no longer receives imports Check that the campaign activity is still turned on. Imports skip activities that are turned off.
