Importing Mailchimp Campaign Templates into BetterUnite Email Marketing

If you’re transitioning from Mailchimp to BetterUnite Email Marketing, you don’t need to start from scratch. BetterUnite allows you to import your existing Mailchimp email campaigns and templates so you can continue using your familiar designs while taking advantage of BetterUnite’s full fundraising, CRM, and automation platform.

This guide walks you through how to transfer your Mailchimp campaign templates into BetterUnite and what to expect during the process.

Why Import Mailchimp Templates into BetterUnite?

Importing your existing templates helps you:

  • Preserve your brand’s email designs and layouts

  • Reduce setup time when switching platforms

  • Maintain consistency across campaigns

  • Quickly adopt BetterUnite’s integrated Email Marketing, Automation, Giving, and Contacts modules

Once imported, your templates become native BetterUnite Email Marketing templates that can be edited, reused, and sent just like any other BetterUnite email.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure:

  • Your Mailchimp account is connected to BetterUnite

  • You have access to the Mailchimp campaigns or templates you want to import

You can confirm your connection by navigating to:

Settings → Setup MailChimp

You should see a message indicating that your Mailchimp account is linked.

Step 1: Open the Import Email Campaigns & Templates Tool

  1. In BetterUnite, go to Settings → Setup MailChimp

  2. Scroll to the section labeled Import MailChimp Email Campaigns & Templates

  3. Click Import Email Campaigns & Templates…

This opens the Import Campaign modal.

Step 2: Choose Your Import Source

Inside the Import Campaign window, you’ll see two options:

  • From MailChimp (default)

  • From HTML

Select From MailChimp to pull templates directly from your connected Mailchimp account.

Step 3: Select a Mailchimp Email to Import

  1. Use the dropdown labeled Select MailChimp Email to Import

  2. Choose the Mailchimp campaign or template you want to transfer

Only emails available in your Mailchimp account will appear in this list.

Step 4: Name Your New BetterUnite Template

In the Import as Email Name field:

  • Enter the name you want this template to have inside BetterUnite

  • This name is how it will appear in your BetterUnite Email Marketing templates list

Tip: Use a clear naming convention like
“MC – Year-End Appeal 2024” or “MC – Newsletter Template”

Step 5: Import the Template

Click Import Now.

BetterUnite will:

  • Pull the email content from Mailchimp

  • Convert it into a BetterUnite-compatible email template

  • Save it to your Email Marketing templates

Once completed, the template is ready to use immediately.

What Happens After Import?

After importing, your template:

  • Lives entirely inside BetterUnite (no ongoing Mailchimp dependency)

  • Can be edited using BetterUnite’s email editor

  • Can be used in:

    • One-time email campaigns

    • Automated workflows

    • Fundraising and event communications

This makes it easy to fully transition off Mailchimp while keeping your existing designs.

Best Practices for a Smooth Transition

  • Import your core templates first (newsletters, appeals, receipts)

  • Review formatting after import and make small adjustments if needed

  • Rebuild any Mailchimp-specific merge tags using BetterUnite fields

  • Test-send emails before launching live campaigns

Summary

BetterUnite’s Mailchimp import feature makes switching platforms simple. By importing your existing Mailchimp email campaigns and templates, you can:

  • Retain your brand’s look and feel

  • Accelerate onboarding to BetterUnite

  • Fully leverage BetterUnite’s integrated Email Marketing, CRM, Giving, and Automation tools

This approach lets you transition confidently without disrupting your communications.
