Peer-to-Peer Activity Tracking Pledges: Per-Unit vs. Flat Amount

This article explains the two pledge options available on the Pledge page for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) activity tracking events: Per-Unit and Flat Amount. Use pledges to support one or more participants and choose how your donation total is calculated.

Where you’ll see pledge options

On the event’s Pledge page, you’ll see a pledge card (for example, Pledge for a Runner) where you can:

  • Select one or more participants

  • Choose a Pledge Type (Per-Unit or Flat Amount)

  • Enter a pledge amount

  • (Optional) Set a maximum cap

  • Select Add Pledge

Pledge types

Per-Unit pledge (activity-based)

A Per-Unit pledge calculates your donation based on how much activity the participant completes.

Example

  • You pledge $5 per mile

  • The participant completes 10 miles

  • Your total pledge is $50

When to use a Per-Unit pledge

  • You want your donation to scale with activity or effort

  • You like rewarding progress and performance

Optional: Maximum cap

If available, you can set a maximum total for your pledge.

Example

  • $5 per mile

  • Cap: $100

  • Participant completes 30 miles → calculated total is $150, but your pledge is capped at $100

Flat Amount pledge (one-time)

A Flat Amount pledge is a fixed donation that does not change based on activity.

Example

  • You pledge $50 flat

  • Whether the participant completes 2 miles or 20 miles, your pledge remains $50

When to use a Flat Amount pledge

  • You want a predictable, fixed donation total

  • You want to support a participant without tying your gift to activity

How activity types affect pledges

Activity tracking events define one or more Activity Types (for example, Run, Walk, Bike).

  • For Per-Unit pledges, the unit shown (such as per mile) matches the event’s configured activity unit.

  • You may only be able to create per-unit pledges for specific activity types, depending on event setup.

Pledging to more than one participant

The Select one or more participants option lets you support multiple participants with a single pledge.

  • The pledge applies to each selected participant

  • For Per-Unit pledges, activity is tracked and calculated separately for each participant

  • For Flat pledges, the pledge amount is the total amount, not per participant

What happens after you add a pledge?

After selecting Add Pledge:

  • The pledge is recorded for the selected participant(s)

  • For Per-Unit pledges, totals update as activity is logged

  • For Flat Amount pledges, the total is known immediately

Depending on event settings, pledges may be finalized or processed at a specific time (for example, after activities are locked).

Frequently asked questions

Why don’t I see a final total for a Per-Unit pledge yet?
Per-Unit pledges depend on recorded activity. Totals become accurate as activity logs are entered and once the event is finalized or locked.

What does “per mile” (or another unit) mean?
It refers to the unit used by the event’s activity tracking setup (miles, minutes, steps, etc.). Your pledge amount is multiplied by the participant’s total in that unit.

Can I limit my Per-Unit pledge?
Yes. If available, use Set a maximum cap to limit your total donation.
