Supporter / Member Portal Settings
The Supporter Portal settings allow your organization to control what information supporters and members can view and edit directly from their portal.
These settings help you balance self-service convenience for supporters with data consistency and control for your organization.
What are Supporter Portal settings?
Supporter Portal settings define:
-
Whether members can update their own profile information
-
Whether donors (non-members) can update their profile information
-
Exactly which fields supporters are allowed to edit
All changes made by supporters are applied directly to their contact record in BetterUnite.
Where to find Supporter Portal settings
-
Go to Settings
-
Select Supporter Portal from the left-hand menu
-
Review and update your portal configuration
-
Click Save Portal Settings when finished
Allow profile updates by Members
When enabled, members can update their own contact information from the supporter portal.
-
Applies to supporters with an active membership
-
Useful for keeping member details current without staff intervention
You can enable this independently from donor updates.
Allow profile updates by Donors
When enabled, donors (who may not have memberships) can update their own contact information from the portal.
-
Ideal for recurring donors
-
Helps reduce administrative data updates
If this option is disabled, donors will have read-only access to their profile.
Choosing which fields supporters can edit
Under Editable Fields, you can select exactly which contact fields supporters are allowed to modify.
Common examples include:
-
Address
-
Phone numbers
-
Company name
-
Date of birth
-
Employer
-
Job title
-
Occupation
-
Custom fields (such as dietary preferences)
Only the fields selected here will be visible and editable in the supporter portal.
How this affects the supporter experience
When supporters log into the portal:
-
They can only edit fields you’ve explicitly enabled
-
Changes are saved instantly to their profile
-
Membership and giving data remain protected and read-only
This gives supporters flexibility while maintaining accurate records.
Best practices
-
Enable edits for fields that frequently change (address, phone, employer)
-
Limit edits on fields tied to reporting or compliance
-
Use custom fields to safely collect member-specific information
-
Review settings periodically as your organization grows
