Sign In With a Passkey
Overview
A passkey lets you sign in to BetterUnite with your face, fingerprint or device PIN instead of typing your password and a verification code. Passkeys can't be phished or guessed, and there is nothing to remember.
A passkey is saved on the device where you create it, or in the password manager that device uses. You set one up once on each computer or phone you want to sign in from.
Before you start
- You need to be signed in to BetterUnite. You can only add a passkey from your own User Settings.
- Use a current browser: Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox on a computer, phone or tablet with a screen lock (face, fingerprint or PIN) turned on.
Add a passkey
- Sign in with your email, password and verification code as usual.
- Click your name or picture in the top right corner, then choose User Settings.
- Find the Passkeys card.
- In Name this passkey, type a name that tells you which device it's on, such as "Work laptop" or "My iPhone."
- Click Add a passkey.
- When your device asks, confirm with your face, fingerprint or PIN.
The passkey now appears in the list on the Passkeys card, with the date you added it.
Save the passkey to your phone
If you want to sign in on a computer by scanning a QR code with your phone, the passkey has to be saved on your phone. There are two ways to do that:
- Add it from your phone. Open betterunite.com in your phone's browser, sign in, and follow the steps above.
- Add it from your computer, but save it to your phone. After you click Add a passkey, choose the option to use another device (in Chrome this is Use a phone or tablet), then scan the QR code with your phone's camera.
Sign in with a passkey
- Go to the BetterUnite login page.
- Click Sign in with a passkey. You don't need to enter your email first.
- Choose your passkey and confirm with your face, fingerprint or PIN. If the passkey is on your phone, choose the option to use a phone, then scan the QR code with your phone.
A passkey sign-in counts as both steps of two-step verification, so you go straight into your account.
If your organization requires two-step verification and you sign in with your password instead, you can also use your passkey as the second step. On the Verify your identity page, click Use my passkey.
Which devices share a passkey
Some passkeys sync to your other devices and some stay on one device. It depends on where your device saves them.
| Where the passkey is saved | Where you can use it |
|---|---|
| iCloud Keychain (Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad) | Every Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account |
| Google Password Manager (Chrome, Android) | Every device where you use Chrome or Android with the same Google Account |
| A password manager app, such as 1Password | Every device where you use that app |
| Windows Hello | Only that Windows computer |
| A security key | Any device you plug the key into |
Manage your passkeys
- Add more than one. You can have a passkey on each device you use. Each one is listed on the Passkeys card in User Settings.
- Remove one. On the Passkeys card, click Remove next to the passkey. You won't be able to sign in with it anymore. Remove a passkey when you give away or lose a device.
Note: If your organization requires an authenticator app or passkey, you can't remove your last one. Set up an authenticator app or another passkey first, or ask an administrator to reset your two-step verification.
Troubleshooting
My phone says there are no passkeys saved for BetterUnite
Your phone doesn't have a BetterUnite passkey yet. Usually one of these is the reason:
- You haven't added a passkey yet. Follow Add a passkey above.
- You added the passkey on your computer, and it was saved only there (for example, with Windows Hello). On that computer, use the computer's own face, fingerprint or PIN prompt instead of scanning the QR code. To use your phone, add a passkey to it as described in Save the passkey to your phone.
- The passkey is saved in a password manager your phone isn't using. On an iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then AutoFill & Passwords, and turn on the app that holds your passkey.
I don't see the Sign in with a passkey button
The button appears only in browsers that support passkeys. Update your browser, or try a different one.
It says this device already has a passkey for my account
You already added a passkey on this device, so you can use it to sign in. You don't need a second one.
My passkey isn't working
You can always sign in with your email and password instead. Once you're in, remove the old passkey in User Settings and add a new one.
