The Volunteer Portal: Your Volunteers' Self-Service Hub

The volunteer portal gives your volunteers a personal dashboard where they can view their upcoming shifts, check in and out, track their hours, and manage their profile — all without needing to contact an admin. (*some features subject to availability in your package)

Sharing the portal with your volunteers

The portal is accessible to any volunteer who has a BetterUnite account at https://betterunite.com/portal. You can share the portal link:

  • In your confirmation emails after signup
  • In shift reminder emails
  • On your organization's volunteer information page

What volunteers can do in the portal

View upcoming shifts

Volunteers see a list of their upcoming shifts with the date, time, job assignment, and location. Past shifts move to the history section automatically.

Check in and check out

When a volunteer has a shift scheduled for today, a Check In button appears on their upcoming shift. They tap it to record their arrival. Once checked in, the button changes to Check Out for when they leave.

Check-in is available within the shift's time window — volunteers can't check in hours early.

Self-cancel a shift

Volunteers can cancel an upcoming shift directly from the portal. If your organization has set a cancellation cutoff (e.g., 24 hours before the shift), the cancel option disappears once the cutoff passes. This helps prevent last-minute no-shows while still giving volunteers flexibility.

View hours history

The hours tab shows a complete log of the volunteer's service, including:

  • Each shift with check-in/checkout times and credited hours
  • Lifetime total hours
  • Year-to-date hours
Log off-platform hours

Volunteers can submit hours for work done outside of scheduled shifts — things like at-home prep, supply runs, or remote tasks. Self-reported hours go into the Pending review queue for admin approval before being credited.

Update their profile

Volunteers can update their contact information (name, email, phone) directly from the portal, keeping your records current without admin involvement.

Download service transcripts

Volunteers can download their own service transcript PDF from the portal — a branded record of their approved hours that they can use for school requirements, court-ordered service, or their own records.
