Understanding “Total Influenced Donation Amount”
What does this number mean?
Total Influenced Donation Amount shows how much giving has happened because of this person—not donations they made themselves.
It answers questions like:
-
“How much money has this person helped bring in?”
-
“How much giving has this host/table captain/connector inspired?”
This number reflects only donations made by other people who are linked to this contact through influence (usually through event tables).
How influence works
The system tracks when one person helps bring someone else to an event, table, or giving opportunity. When that happens, we record an influence attribution that says:
-
Influencer → the person doing the influencing
-
Influenced contact → the person attending or giving because of them
Most influence happens automatically through event registrations and table seating:
When a table has a host or captain
-
Everyone assigned to that table is considered influenced by the host.
-
Anyone who buys tickets for that table is also considered influenced by the host.
When guests or ticket buyers change
If someone moves to a different table, or the table host changes:
-
Old influence links are retired.
-
New influence links are created based on the current setup.
This ensures the influence totals always reflect the current state of the table or event—not old arrangements.
How we calculate “Total Influenced Donation Amount”
Once influence relationships are set, the system totals up donations made by all contacts this person has influenced.
The calculation includes:
-
Find everyone this person currently influences
(Based on active table assignments and influence records.) -
Look at the donations those influenced contacts have made
Only primary donations with a positive amount are included. -
Add those donations together
The result is this contact’s Total Influenced Donation Amount.
Important:
This total does not include this person’s own gifts.
It only reflects giving from other people who are influenced by them.
What’s included (and not included)
Included
✔ Donations made by people the system currently considers influenced by this contact
✔ Donations of any type or campaign
✔ Only primary donations (no duplicates or installment child records)
✔ Only positive dollar amounts
Not included
✘ The contact’s own direct gifts
✘ Donations from people no longer linked through influence (e.g., after table changes)
✘ Split/child/instalment records
✘ Zero or negative donations
Examples
Example 1: A table captain driving giving
-
Alice is the host of a table.
-
Bob, Carol, and Dan are assigned to her table.
-
They later make donations of $500, $250, and $100.
Alice’s Total Influenced Donation Amount = $850
She didn’t give the money herself—but her influence helped bring it in.
Example 2: Host changes
-
Alice is originally the host of Table 1.
-
Later the table host changes to Eve.
The system updates influence accordingly:
-
Alice’s influenced amount drops (because she no longer influences that table).
-
Eve’s influenced amount increases (because she is now the host).
Why this number matters
Total Influenced Donation Amount helps you identify:
-
Connectors and ambassadors who bring new donors to your organization
-
Hosts and table captains who generate significant giving
-
People with strong networks, even if their own giving is modest
-
Impact beyond personal donations, which is often just as important
Use this number alongside direct giving totals to see both:
-
“How much does this person give?” and
-
“How much giving happens because of them?”
Common questions
Why isn’t a donation showing up in someone’s influenced total?
Common reasons:
-
The donor is no longer seated at or linked to that person’s table/host
-
Influence was removed due to a change in table assignments
-
The donation is a secondary/child record
-
The donation amount is zero or negative
Can I manually choose which donations count?
Not directly.
The total is automatically calculated based on current influence relationships.
To change the total, update the underlying table assignments, host assignments, or influence links.
