Transfer Stripe Cards on File to your BetterUnite Stripe account

You can transfer Stripe cards on file for your recurring donors to your new Stripe account within BetterUnite.

Transferring your Stripe repeat donor cards on file involves generating a request for transfer from your current Stripe account to your BetterUnite linked Stripe account. This process is enabled within your Stripe account directly and the card information is not ever exposed to BetterUnite.

Step 1: Download Stripe Customer IDs for your repeat donors

  1. Log in to your current Stripe account and navigate to the Customers page.
  2. Let's filter this list to get your repeat donors. You can click the Repeat Customers tab for quick filtering.
  3. Click the Export button.
  4. Adjust the columns to only select the ID field. We only need the customer id field for the next step.
  5. Export as a CSV.
  6. Confirm that your exported file only has a single column with the customer ID field in it (starting with cus_), and no title row.

Step 2: Transfer Cards-on-File to your new Stripe account

  1. In your current Stripe account, navigate to the customers page.
  2. Click Copy.
  3. In the Copy Method pop up menu, select Upload file.
  4. Choose the CSV file you exported in the previous step in your computer
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Enter the account ID acct_1CYgaFIGQdMZUBum in the recipient account id field in the pop up window

  7. Click Confirm.

Step 3: Associate Recurring Payments and Membership Subscriptions with transferred customers and cards

Once you have completed the first two steps, the BetterUnite team will take over the next phase. Stripe will initiate the transfer of customers and their associated cards to your BetterUnite account. At that stage, please notify us so we can approve the import within Stripe under the Customers section. After Stripe finalizes the transfer, we will access a mapping file containing the old and new customer IDs, along with the card reference IDs. This enables us to migrate existing recurring payment methods to the newly transferred payment methods using the BetterUnite import tool. (You are welcome to use our tool that is exposed on your BetterUnite settings -> Stripe Express page -> actions -> import recurring schedule link, but it would require you to prepare the above file that maps the old customer to the new customer ids, and the instructions are provided on the import tool.)
