Turning On Better.AI

Better.AI is switched off until somebody at your organization turns it on. This is deliberate: answering questions about your donors means sending some of their information to our AI provider, and that should be a decision somebody makes rather than something that happens quietly.

Turning it on takes about a minute and nothing is sent before you do.

Before you start

  • You need administrator access to your BetterUnite account.
  • You should be comfortable agreeing to the terms on behalf of your organization. They cover what is sent to our AI provider and when, and they are summarized on the screen before you confirm.
  • Nothing needs to be set up first. There is no configuration, no import and no waiting.

Turning it on

  1. Click the stars icon in the top navigation bar. When Better.AI has not been turned on, the icon is highlighted in red.
  2. Read what appears in the panel. It explains what Better.AI does, what is sent to our AI provider, and links to the full detail.
  3. Click Turn on Better.AI.
  4. Wait a few seconds while your account is prepared, then click See what Better.AI can do.

You can also start from Analytics then Better.AI in the left menu, which explains every capability before you decide.

What happens immediately after

Chat works straight away. Open the panel and ask a question about your own records.

Donor summaries and cultivation plans appear on contact records, on the Better.AI card beside Recent Giving.

Recommendations arrive overnight. Better.AI reviews your donors, recurring gifts, pledges and events once a night, so the Recommendations tab on your dashboard fills in by the next morning rather than instantly. If you would rather not wait, open the tab and click Check now.

How you compare and Event health need nothing. Neither uses AI, so both are available whether or not Better.AI is switched on, provided your plan includes them.

If you see "this account is not eligible"

This message means your account cannot be set up for Better.AI yet. It is almost always one of two things:

  • No payment processor has been set up. Better.AI answers questions about giving, and an account that cannot take a gift has no giving to answer questions about.
  • No transactions have been processed. A brand new account has nothing for Better.AI to read yet.

If neither applies to you, contact support@betterunite.com and we will look at the account. This is a check we can clear for you.

Why the recommendations tab looked empty before

Until Better.AI is turned on, nothing has examined your data, so the Recommendations tab shows an invitation to switch it on rather than a list. This is on purpose. Telling an organization that nothing needs its attention would be the most reassuring sentence on the page and, before activation, one that nothing had checked.

Turning it off again

Contact support@betterunite.com and we will switch it off for your account. Nothing further is sent from that point. Anything already generated, such as a donor summary you asked for, stays in your account as an ordinary record until you delete it.
