Sorting your existing milestones

If you were using Grant Center before typed schedule items existed, all your milestones are currently untyped. The guided review proposes a type for each one and lets you accept or change it in bulk.

Running the review

  1. Open the Schedule panel on a grant, or the classification tool from the Schedule & deadlines tab.
  2. Click Review unclassified items. You get a list of every untyped milestone with a proposed type and the reason for it.
  3. Change anything that is wrong.
  4. Click Apply.

The review is a preview until you apply it. Nothing changes while you are looking.

How the proposals are made

Two rules, in this order:

  1. The name is read first. If it mentions something that usually describes an obligation — "financial report", "site visit", "letter of intent", "closeout", "audit", "deliverable" — the milestone is proposed as a requirement of the matching type.
  2. Then the amount. If the name says nothing recognizable but the milestone carries an expected amount, it is proposed as a payment.

Terminology is checked before the amount on purpose. A milestone called "final financial report" that carries a figure is an obligation with a budget attached, not an installment — proposing it as a payment would quietly add money to your expected-income projection that the funder never agreed to send. Where a proposed requirement does carry an amount, the review flags it so you can decide what the figure meant.

If neither rule matches, nothing is proposed and the item stays as it is.

You do not have to do this

Leaving milestones unclassified is fully supported. They keep working exactly as they did: they appear on the deadline agenda, they count towards overdue figures, and they generate reminders. Classifying them adds requirement lifecycles and payment reconciliation — it does not switch anything on that was previously off.
